The Buena Vista County Attorney says his department has resumed it’s pursuit of school truancy cases. Paul Allen says his office was working with area schools to come up with a solution, but everything got put on hold during covid.
Allen says he and Assistant County Attorney Ashely Herrig resumed their discussions with officials from every district in the county this fall and have already identified nearly twenty Storm Lake families where children have been absent from school more than twenty-five days this school year.
Allen says every one of those families responded to a request for remediation and participated in the first round of talks facilitated by former juvenille judge and current Buena Vista University law professor Mary Timko.
The school district and county attorney’s office are focused on learning why certain children are not attending school and finding solutions to those barriers.
