Newell, IA (KICD)– A Buena Vista County community is going to be without a pool this summer after city officials made the tough decision to close the current facility for safety reasons.

A post to the City of Newell’s Facebook page says the pool was originally build in 1956 and was expected to last 25 to 30 years with the city getting more than double that out of it.

The decision to close was made following conversations with engineers and local health officials regarding a number of safety concerns including substantial water loss due to old and outdated equipment, caving walls and uneven decking due to erosion and issues in the underground pumphouse.

The post goes on to say that making the needed repairs in order to re-open would like cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. A pool committee is currently being put together to look at the possibility of building a new facility.
