Spencer, IA (KICD)– A Spencer man was seriously hurt in a single vehicle crash on the edge of Downtown Wednesday afternoon.

The Spencer Police Department tells KICD News a pickup driven by 35-year-old Benjamin Mingus was northbound on Grand Avenue shortly after two o’clock when it crossed into the oncoming lanes and collided with a tree across from the Spencer Fire Department.

Mingus had to be cut out of the totaled vehicle using mechanical means before he was taken to Spencer Hospital and airlifted to Sioux Falls. An investigation determined Mingus has a history of seizures which has led investigators to believe the medical condition is the cause of the crash.
