Authorities are seeking information from a Lyon County Iowa man in connection with the disappearance of a University of Pittsburgh student in the Dominican Republic. Loudoun County, Virginia, Sheriff’s officials have identified 24-year-old Joshua Riibe of Rock Rapids, Iowa, as a person of interest in the missing person case of 20-year-old Sudiksha Konanki.

Konanki was last seen on beach surveillance video at the Riu Republica Resort in Punta Cana on March 6th. She was on spring break. Investigators believe Riibe was the last person to speak with her.  Reports indicate Konanki was with a group of students and two other American men. A Dominican police source says she stayed on the beach with one of those men after the others returned to the hotel. That man told officials they went swimming and were caught by a large wave. He claims to have returned to shore and passed out, unsure of what happened to Konanki.

While officials have raised the possibility of drowning, the investigation is ongoing. The Dominican Republic National Police, the Attorney General’s Office, the FBI, and the U.S. Embassy are all involved. The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office says they have no further information and are not the lead agency in the investigation. They have asked for privacy for the Riibe family.
