Spencer, IA (KICD)– The Spencer City Council finalized a development deal on Monday that will involve moving a section of city trail.

The area in question is along West 18th Street next to Casey’s where Family Dollar has showed interest in building a store, but the city showed concern for safety with the current trail running through what would be the parking lot area.

City Manager Dan Gifford has been working with the developer for the last couple of months and came up with two possibilities for moving the trail, one keeping it in front of the future retail site and other looping it further north.

Of the options presented, a majority of the council, including Bill Orrison, showed support for going with the more expensive route to hopefully alleviate any safety issues when the new business opens.

There was also a thought by Councilman Donovan Wunschel about whether or not moving the trail for safety would have any effect on those using it.

Councilman Loren Reit also preferred the northern loop when considering future development.

Despite some initial hesitancy the council voted unanimously to go along with the agreement with the developer hoping to get a majority of the site work completed by this Fall.
