Spencer, IA (Northwestiowanow.com) — Communities throughout the United States paused to honor our fallen soldiers Monday. The keynote address at Spencer’s Memorial Day Service was presented by army veteran Bonnie Anderson.

Eleven flags were dedicated to veterans who died during the past year. Serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War 2: Knox Campbell. Serving the Army during Korea: Verlyn Kramer, Donald Schoer, Deane Anderson, and Wendell Anderson; Serving in the Army National Guard during Korea: Clifford Britton; Serving in the Air Force during Vietnam: Ron Essick. Serving in the Army-Air Force during Vietnam and the Gulf War: Charles Watkins. Also Army veterans Duane Barglof and Verdis Koehlmoos, and Navy Veteran Mel Henning.

The salute was presented by the Spencer American Legion and VFW Honor Guard, and taps was provided by members of the Spencer High School band.
