Storm Lake, IA (KICD)– The City of Storm Lake is working to resolve what, for some, has become an issue with spills of liquid garbage around the community.

Information presented at Monday’s regular council meeting notes Carroll Refuse Service, the company providing solid waste removal to Storm Lake, has been cited for illicit discharge violations on four separate occasions in just over two weeks following a series of hydraulic leaks in trucks to liquid garbage being spilled on public and private property.

Owner Curt Snyder told the council the two hydraulic leaks were the cause of some faulty parts on the trucks that have since been fixed, but the garbage spills are a more complicated problem that starts with problems getting the needed parts for the last several months.

The next piece to the problem is dealing with customers having refuse containing high amounts of liquid that overtime will start leaking from solid waste trucks.

A recommendation was set forth by the council to work on some increased public education on how to avoid such messes with Councilwoman Maggie Martinez adding those that are part of the problem can be part of the solution if properly instructed.
