Spencer, IA (northwestiowanow.com) – With temperatures expected to climb above 100 degrees this weekend, Spencer Hospital officials are reminding everyone to take precautions during the heat advisory.
Chris Meyer, Director of Ambulance and EMS Services, says the mix of heat, humidity, and sun can be dangerous—especially for people with health conditions or those without access to air conditioning.
The most common risks are heat exhaustion and dehydration.
If you see someone with these symptoms, move them to a cooler place, offer small sips of water, and loosen tight clothing. If they don’t improve, call 911.
If you don’t have air conditioning, Meyer suggests going to public places like the library, shopping centers, or a friend’s house. Even closing curtains during the day can help keep your home cooler.
Spencer Hospital’s EMS team is reviewing their emergency protocols and preparing for more heat-related calls.
