Spencer, Ia (Northwest Iowa Now) – The Spencer Girls Tennis team played host to Sergeant Bluff-Luton on Saturday at the Riverview Tennis Courts in Spencer.
In Position 1 singles, Abbey Crew would drop Set 1 and 2 by scores of 6-2, giving Camryn Glass of SB-L the win.
Spencer’s Kennedy Graettinger picked up a 2-1 win over Carley Rooney in Position 2 singles, tying the dual up at 1.
The Tigers would pick up a pair of 2-0 victories in Position 3 and 4 singles. Brynn Merchant took set 1 7-6 in a 7-4 tiebreaker then shutout Stella Britton of Sergeant Bluff-Luton in Set 2 6-0. Kate Elser swept Clara Britton with two shutout set wins, giving Spencer a 3-1 lead.
Sergeant Bluff-Luton got a win in Position 5 singles from Kaeley Abels over Jill Kabrick 2-1.
Spencer made it 4-2 after singles when Allie Ewalt picked up two 6-0 shutout set wins against the Warriors’ Madison Grote.
In position 2 Doubles, Kate Elser and Jill Kabrick of Spencer fell to Camryn Glass and Clara Britton of Sergeant Bluff-Luton 2-1.
It was Irene Ucella and Aubrey McFarland of Spencer locking down the win in Position 3 doubles, taking set 1 6-4 and set 2 6-2 against Kaeley Abels and Madison Grote of Sergeant Bluff-Luton.
The win advances Spencer to the Class 1A State Tournament. The IGHSAU gives the Tigers a #5 seed and they will collide with #4 seed Dike-New Hartford at 9:00am on October 6th in Pella at the Caldwell Park Tennis Courts. Winner will advance to play either the #1 seed Xavier of Cedar Rapids or the #8 seed Shenandoah at 1:00 on October 6th for the semifinals.
