Storm Lake, IA (NorthwestIowaNow.com) — A major wind energy project in Buena Vista County is moving forward after getting the green light from county officials.

The Board of Supervisors has approved permits for Allete Clean Energy to “repower” its wind farm. The plan involves replacing 259 existing wind turbines with between 44 and 55 new, more efficient ones.

Decommissioning of the old towers will begin ahead of the new construction. This process includes removing the top four feet of the old foundations and taking down overhead power lines.

An Allete project manager says while major construction is set for 2027, some work could start as early as next year to qualify for tax credits. The company hopes to have the new turbines operational by December of 2027.

County officials note that a few of the proposed turbine locations could be excluded if eagle nests or poor ground conditions are discovered.
