Orleans, IA (KICD) — Algae blooms have taken off during the recent hot weather.
DNR Fisheries Biologist Mike Hawkins says the blue/green growth – technically known as Sino Bacteria – can be observed in Big Spirit Lake, East Lake Okoboji and even the much deeper West Lake Okoboji this year.
Hawkins tells KICD News an invasive species is changing how the local lakes respond to the yearly phenomenon.
Hawkins says algae gives off toxins that are dangerous to people and animals. He says dogs tend to be attracted by the smell but should kept away.
