Spirit Lake, IA (Northwestiowanow.com) — Highway 9/71 between Spirit Lake and Superior was closed down for an accident again Sunday afternoon.

Around 3:15pm the Westbound car driven by 41-year-old Roger Guitierrez of Estherville lost control, spun backwards, and struck an Eastbound pickup driven by 38-year-old Deja Daniels of Ceylon, Minnesota.

Daniels was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

All three occupants of the other vehicle were taken by ambulance to the hospital in Spirit Lake. Marionella Gomez had to be extricated from the vehicle by the Spirit Lake fire department. She received incapaciting injuries and was later flown to Avera Medical Center in Sioux Falls. Raymundo Gonzales and Guitierrez received what were described as non-incapacitating injuries.
In addition to the Spirit Lake Fire Department, The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Department was assisted by the Emmet County Sheriff’s Department; Estherville and Spirit Lake Police; the Iowa DNR; Spirit Lake First Responders; and ambulance crews from Spirit Lake and Terril.

The cause of the accident is under investigation. There was a multiple vehicle accident on that stretch of road back on October 29th that required that stretch of road to be shut down.
