SPENCER, IA (Northwestiowanow) — Iowa State Patrol Trooper Kevin Krull is reminding residents to slow down and prepare for changing road conditions.

With winter weather rapidly approaching, Krull stopped by the KICD studio to share safety tips.

He says many drivers underestimate how their vehicles handle snow and ice.

Krull warns against relying on cruise control and reminds drivers that posted speed limits don’t always apply in winter conditions.

Vehicle preparation is also key. Krull recommends checking tire treads and pressure, replacing worn wipers, and using winter-grade washer fluid. He also advises clearing all snow from the car before driving.

Krull also stresses the importance of a winter survival kit in case you get stranded. He says it should include items to keep you safe and warm until help arrives.

Other tips include keeping your gas tank at least half full, carrying extra plastic and tape to seal broken windows, and staying in your vehicle with your seatbelt on until help arrives.
