Spencer, Ia (Northwest Iowa Now) – The Spencer Girls Basketball team opened up the 2025-2026 season at home against MOC-Floyd Valley, the same team that eliminated Spencer in last year’s regional Tournament.
The Tigers jumped out to an early 7-2 lead, but the Dutch came back to retake the lead and led 13-10 at the end of the 1st quarter.
It was a grind of a 2nd quarter as both teams struggled with turnovers, and MOC-Floyd Valley led 23-16 going into the locker room.
In many ways, the 3rd quarter was much different, as each team scored 19 to keep the Dutch lead at 7 going into the 4th quarter.
A pair of MOC-Floyd Valley starters fouled out in the 4th quarter, and the Tigers outscored the Dutch 15-7 down the stretch to win 50-49.
Sydnee Hopkins was big in the win for Spencer, scoring 21 points and going 7 of 10 from the free throw line. In her first Varsity appearance, Freshman Calista Frankenstein impressed with 17 points. Both Hopkins and Frankenstein were massive presences on the defensive side of the ball.
The Tigers begin the year 1-0 and will be back in action on December 2nd against East of Sioux City on the road.
MOC-Floyd Valley was led by Sophomore Brielle Hoegh’s 16 on the night as the Dutch begin the year 0-1 and will start Siouxland Conference action against Boyden-Hull on Tuesday.
