Melvin, IA (KICD) — The Iowa State Patrol reports two fatalities and multiple injuries in a Sunday morning collision at the intersection of highway 59 and County Road A-34 near Melvin in Osceola County. Troopers say 27 year old Dore Oswaldo Hernades Canales of Sioux city was Eastbound on the county road and failed to stop at the intersection.
He was struck by the Southbound vehicle driven by 22 year old Benjamin Gibson of Sibley. Gibson was transported to the Sheldon Hospital with undisclosed injuries.
The Canales vehicle rolled and stopped when it struck a rural water tower. Two of his passengers – 24 year old Jessica Richardo of Sioux City and a nine year old child – were pronounced dead at the scene. Canales, 54 year old Edith Marina Canales Rivas of Sioux city, and a six year old juvenile were transported to local hospitals for treatment.
The accident report does not list any traffic charges at this time.
State Patrol was assisted at the scene by Sheldon Police, Sibley Ambulance, Sheldon EMS, The Melvin and Sanbourn fire departments, and Boji towing.
The accident ocurred around 9:15 am.
