SPENCER, IA (Northwestiowanow.com) — The Stolley Gravel Pit in Spencer continues to offer trout fishing opportunities this winter.
Spencer Park and Recreation Director Bob Fullhart says anglers have been hitting the ice, but safety remains key.
Access to the gravel pit is by foot only, with no vehicles allowed on the ice. Anglers are also required to follow all state regulations, including having a trout stamp if targeting trout.
The Iowa Great Lakes Fishing Club, led by Kelly Cook, has been working to improve habitat at Stolley Pit. Fullhart says the club placed fish cribs on the ice this winter, which will sink to the bottom when the ice melts, creating structure for fish.
Despite cold weather, Fullhart says anglers are still catching fish, making Stolley Pit an easy-access option for winter fishing.
