Sheldon, IA (Northwestiowanow.com) — If they already had not heard the news, worshippers at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Sheldon were informed Sunday that their school will permanently close at the end of the school year.
The Diocese of Sioux City had already announced on Friday that it’s the end of the line for the school that first opened in 1956. Bishop Joh E. Keehner said that it is a sad occasion, and a difficult decision for leadership at the school.
Board President Michael Murphy said he’s concerned about the impact the closure will have on the community, and the families from Sheldon, Ashton, and Sibley who were sending students to the Pre-school through 8th grade school, but that economically the board could not see a way forward.
There are currently 42 students enrolled. No announcement yet on what will become of the school building at 11th Street and 4th Avenue.
