Spencer, Iowa (NorthwestIowaNow.com) — The Spencer Community School Board has officially approved the real estate transaction to the Northwest Iowa Corridor Habitat for Humanity. The property includes a double lot on East 3rd and East 4th Streets near the old auditorium, land that has been vacant for over 50 years.
Northwest Iowa Corridor Executive Director Joe Bjornstad says building a presence in Spencer was important for them.
Bjornstad says they anticipate a $200,000 grand from Home Depot, which is directing funds toward areas recovering from “forgotten disasters.”
Now, Habitat is actively looking for applicants.  Selected homeowners must complete approximately 360 hours of ‘sweat equity” by helping build the houses. The houses are able to purchase the home at a significantly lowered interest rate.
