A Northwest Iowa couple has been convicted for helping their fugitive son escape the country.

19-year-old Ali Younes was on house arrest earlier this year with his family in Sutherland awaiting trial for an attempted murder case in Eastern Iowa when he reportedly removed an electronic monitoring device and fled the country.

Younes’s mother Lima was found guilty in August of aiding and abetting her son’s escape. His father Alfred pled guilty earlier this month. Both face up to five years in prison.

Younes was originally seen boarding a plane for Jordan and was not able to be extradited back to Iowa at the time because the United States does not have an extradition treaty with that nation.
