Spencer, IA (KICD)– Spencer’s new Fire Chief has been on the job for a couple of months and is continuing to get adjusted to his new role after spending nearly 20 years on the job in Eastern Iowa.

Jesse Coulson tells KICD News one of the biggest differences between his previous department and here is that Spencer’s fire department is a mostly paid volunteer agency versus Dubuque being a full-time department.

Despite not having a full crew “on shift” at all times, Chief Coulson says there is still a major focus on getting the needed help out the door as quickly as possible.

Chief Coulson adds another big piece to being a member of the fire department is interacting with the community and that he and others from the staff are always happy to answer questions about fire safety or even help members of the public learn more about the department.
