Wahpeton, IA (KICD) — DNR Fisheries Biologist Mike Hawkins believes the recent treatment of Eurasian Water Milfoil in three shallow areas of West Lake Okoboji has eradicated the invasive species for now. The aquatic plant was spotted in The Harbor, The Wahpeton Canals, and the vicinity of the Lazy Lagoon at Triboji this summer. Since the lake is classified as an “Outstanding Water Body” the state had to go through a permitting process in order to use the herbide ProcellaCor. Immediately following approval treatment was targeted on 19 acres of the lake.
A followup indicates the the weed was killed in those spots. The DNR will continue to monitor the Great Lakes for more infestations, and they continue to ask boaters to drain and clean their boats when transporting them between lakes to prevent any invasive species from spreading.
