Spencer, IA (KICD) — Spencer police made a welfare check last night, were attacked by dogs, and wound up killing one of the vicious animals.
Police Chief Mark Warburton says they were dispatched to the 900 block of East 7th Street for a mental health check about 6pm. Upon arrival they say the person in question was verbally abusive and released two dogs who charged officers. One of them – a pit bull – purused police off of the property and was put down.
The resident retreated inside and refused to come out for about two hours, and was finally taken into custody without incident and taken to Spencer Hospital.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Department, Okoboji Police, Spencer Municipal Hospital, Seasons Center Mobile Crisis, and the Spencer Fire Department were all at the scene.
