Estherville, IA (KICD)– A date has been set for an Estherville man convicted for second degree murder more than eight years ago to plead his case for a new trial.

Now 26-year-old Lee Christensen is currently serving 50 years behind after being found guilty by a jury in 2015 in the death of Thomas Bortvit.

Christensen is asking for a new trial claiming new evidence discovered shows there was an altercation between the two individuals that would he says would at most lead to a conviction for involuntary manslaughter.

Online court records show a non-jury trial on the motion scheduled for March of next year.
