Spencer, IA (KICD)– As we know the winter season is approaching bringing an additional risk of injury from falls.

Alan Faith is the Interim Director of Spencer Hospital’s Emergency Services Department. He says slips, trips and falls are not only common during the cold months, but really all year round.

In order lessen the risk of a fall, Faith says the best course of action is to make sure the path of travel is free of debris and clutter, whether that be snow and ice outside, or belongings indoors.

In the event of a fall Faith suggests trying to control the direction one is going at the time and try to protect the head from making direct contact with the ground. If there is a serious injury or a loss of consciousness he also suggests that fall victims call for help and get to their local emergency room.
