Spencer, IA (KICD)– The Spencer City Council gave its final okay on Monday to contribute a portion of the costs to upgrade the movie theatre in the Southpark Mall.

City Manager Dan Gifford says the city will fund about a third of the roughly three million dollar project but property taxes are NOT going to affected.

As previously reported, Clay County has also agreed to put some money into the project which will offset part of the city’s contribution in the end.

As part of the agreement, Gifford says the owners of the mall have said they will make some improvements on exterior areas of the property.

Work on the upgrades to add two additional auditoriums to the movie theatre and put luxury recliners in the existing while also adding more concessions is expected to begin next month with project completion possible as early as later Spring.
