Spirit Lake, IA (KICD)—Firefighters from multiple Dickinson County departments braved the dangerous cold and wind on Saturday afternoon and evening when a fire broke out along West Lake Okoboji.

Spirit Lake Fire Chief Pat Daly tells KICD News the original call came in around 4:30 for a structure fire in a housing community known as Monarch Cove on the northeast side of the lake.

Chief Daly says the area of Monarch Cove is a difficult area to navigate with emergency equipment because of narrow streets and houses being close together, but firefighters were provided assistance from a number of other different agencies.

Then comes complications brought on by the effects of blizzard and dangerous cold conditions.

Fire crews were on scene for more than five hours on Saturday working to control the blaze, but one home was destroyed with a second said to be severely damaged. Chief Daly says cause is unknown but will be investigated with the help of the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

The call to Monarch Cove was just the latest in a busy start to the weekend for the Spirit Lake Fire Department after having been called for a broken water pipe and a multiple vehicle fires hours earlier.
