Estherville, IA (KICD)– An Estherville man is in custody after a domestic disturbance call turned into an hours long standoff with police on Thursday.
The Estherville Police Department was called to 318 West 5th Avenue shortly before two o’clock Thursday afternoon to a report of a person damaging property following a dispute.
Upon arrival, officers were able to make contact with 38-year-old Andrew Schwager before he allegedly broke a window, threatened officers with a knife and then barricaded himself inside the home.
After multiple failed attempts to get Schwager out of the house, a Crisis Negotiator was called in to try and talk through the situation but that resulted in additional threats toward police.
Schwager later reportedly started a fire in the entryway of the house after several more failed attempts at negotiations which led to the HEAT Tactical Team making a forced entry inside taking the suspect into custody nearly six hours after the initial call was received.
Schwager was ultimately charged with two counts of first degree harassment along with one count each of fourth degree criminal mischief, reckless use of fire and possession of drug paraphernalia.
While working this scene, Estherville Police were also called to two additional domestic incidents that both resulted in arrests.
