Lake Park, IA (KICD) — The city of Lake Park is on board with swapping property with the Harris Lake Park school district. The city owns land north of where the new elementary building is being constructed, and no longer needs three parcels where the current elementary sits.
The council approved a preliminary agreement last week.
Mayor Matt Carstensen says the city will take the district up on its offer to demolish the building first.
The other two parcels are the current playground and a vacant lot. Carstensen tells KICD News the city’s initial thought is to repurpose both.
The school district intends to construct a running track Northeast of the high school in the near-term future. Carstensen hopes the football field might also move there, freeing up room in the Silver Lake City Park.
The agreement still needs to be approved by the Harris Lake Park school board. The architect for the new school is currently taking input before drawing up final plans.
