Des Moines, IA (KICD) — As we reported last week, representatives of the Spirit Lake and Cherokee schools went to the legislature to request the state indemnify insurance carriers in districts where staff members are armed.

The Public Safety Committee – chaired by Boone Republican Phil Thompson – gave their approval to a bill that would do that Friday.

Democrat Beth wessel-Kroeschell from Ames thinks intentionally bringing firearms into buildings puts Iowa students at MORE risk.

The bill would have originally mandated Iowa’s eleven largest school district hire armed policemen as resource officers, but that provision was stripped.
