Spencer, IA (KICD)– Two homes on opposite sides of Spencer were the focus to separate house fire calls over the weekend.
The first call came in just after six o’clock Sunday morning for a kitchen fire at 1005 West 12th Street. Upon arrival, the first units found smoke in the home and were able to quickly put out a fire in the oven and ventilate the home.
Fire damage was contained to the oven, but smoke damage could be seen on the first floor of the structure.
The second potential fire was reported early Monday morning when occupants of 900 2nd Avenue Southeast noted smoke in a bedroom. Firefighters found a light haze throughout the residence after making entry and determined the cause to be a wax warmer, which was unplugged with the smoke then being ventilated. No damage was reported at that scene.
Fire officials note that while wax melters are considered to be much safer than candles, precautions should still be taken like making sure to never leave the device unattended and to make sure it is never placed near or on top of combustible materials like paper or cloth.
