Spencer, IA (KICD)– The Spencer City Council is backing plans to restore a series of buildings in the Downtown Commercial District severely damaged by fire last January.

Councilman Loren Reit chairs the Finance Committee. He says the fifty thousand dollars pledged by the city to match Catalyst Grant funds if awarded will be economic development dollars.

Eric Meter and rest of M and M Grand Ventures have a very ambitious plan in place that will be completed in several phases including almost starting over with the inside of the upper level.

From there the plan is to create a series of new apartments with an offering not commonly seen in Downtown Spencer.

The retail level is going to be more entertainment bringing both an indoor and outdoor aspect.

There was even some emotion starting to show from elected officials as they continue to learn about the impact this project will have on the community which can best be summed up in the words of Councilman and Downtown property owner Tom Nelson.

M and M Grand Ventures is also planning to launch a YouTube channel called “Main Street Archaeology ” to help document the restoration and share some of the fun history behind the buildings.
