Sheldon, IA (KICD)– A rural Sioux County farm property was significantly damaged when a fire broke out in a barn Monday evening.

The Sheldon Fire Department was called to 3097 Log Avenue, about three miles northwest of town, shortly before 6:30 when the structure was found to be already be completely destroyed.

Crews from Sheldon and Boyden then spent more than two hours extinguishing the building’s remains, including a large of hay inside and protecting the surrounding area.

The barn is considered to be a total loss with several goats and chickens also perishing in the blaze. The exact cause is currently undetermined , but the property owner has reason to believe a heating lamp used to keep young animals warm may be the culprit.
