Spencer, IA (KICD) — The City of Spencer has a deal to buy land for the extension of 24th street off of highway 71. The city owns the parcel North of Schoeneman’s Buildlng Center, and has a buyer for the highway frontage, but needs access for two back lots.
After several months of negotiations, City Manager Dan Gifford said they reached a deal with their neighbors to the North – Larry and Ielene Steffes.

The city council voted 5 to 1 to approve the deal, but Councilman Brian Balk said it doesn’t make sense to him.

The council had previously voted to start public domain proceedings against the adjacent property owners in case they couldn’t reach a voluntary deal. Balk was ALSO the sole no vote on that. A public hearing and final approval is scheduled for the April 15th city council meeting.

It was revealed in public for the first time that the buyer of the parcel is Dollar General Stores. Gifford said they plan to close on the property by the end of the month and have the store open by fall.
