Wahpeton, Iowa (NorthwestIowaNow.com) — A massive restoration effort is underway in Wahpeton to revitalize the historic canal systems at Gull Point State Park. Tim Ireland leads the effort for the Lakewood Park Association.
Ireland says sediment has built up for over a century.
This project is a critical follow-up to the successful dredging of Turtle Lake, and fundraising is underway.
By utilizing specialized equipment and crews already on-site, the association is saving an estimated $150,000 in mobilization costs.
Ireland says the restoration is expected to take five to six weeks of solid digging to ensure the waterways remain a valuable destination for generations to come. To contribute contact the Okoboji Foundation or call (712) 332-7177.
