Spencer, Ia (KICD) – In the Class 3A Substate 1 semifinals, Spencer’s contest against LeMars was suspended for over 3-hours due to Lighting.

LeMars’ Jacob Plueger had gotten a couple of goals in the first 17 minutes on runouts to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead.

Right before the lighting delay, Spencer’s Iain MaCrae hit a penalty kick to make the score 2-1 with 29 minutes left to play.

The contest was called at roughly 10:20 and LeMars will advance to the Substate Final.

Spencer Community Schools sent out a Press Release Tuesday Morning following the decision as follows:

On Monday night, a Class 3A Substate Soccer matchup between Spencer and Le Mars was called following a lengthy delay with the Bulldogs leading 2-1.

Due to the state association’s rules, the game can be considered complete if it is past halftime and does not resume because of weather. In this case, Le Mars was declared the winner and will advance to the next round of the IHSAA postseason.

“While we are disappointed that the weather failed to cooperate, we understand the IHSAA rule that’s in place and abide by it,” said Terry Hemann, Spencer Superintendent. “We feel for our student-athletes, coaches, and fans, but also congratulate them on another terrific season.”
