SPENCER, IA (Northwestiowanow) – Spencer Fire Chief Jesse Coulson is reminding residents to put safety first when handling fireworks ahead of the Independence Day holiday.

Coulson says recent changes to Iowa law have standardized the dates and times when fireworks can legally be discharged, making regulations more consistent across communities throughout the state.

 

 

While some celebrations may legally continue until 11 p.m., Coulson encourages residents to be mindful of others in the community.

 

Residents should also take several precautions when using fireworks to reduce the risk of injury or fire. Coulson says people should follow manufacturer instructions, only use fireworks on their own property, ensure children are supervised by adults and keep water or another extinguishing source nearby.

If a firework malfunctions, Coulson strongly recommends placing it in a bucket of water before disposal to ensure it cannot unexpectedly ignite.

The Fire Chief also reminds residents that recent rainfall does not eliminate the threat of fires.
