Spirit Lake, IA (Northwestiowanow.com) — Two weeks ago architects hired by the Spirit Lake school board presented potential plans for facility upgrades including demolition and new construction at both the elementary and high schools. Last week they met with community groups, gave tours, and accepted public input. At that time school board president Jeremy Mouw said it was then up to the public to petition for a bond issue.

That happened within 48 hours and the school board will meet at noon today to accept the petition and officially vote to move forward with the issue in November. Mouw told us last week the board unanimously agrees new construction is preferable to spending 15 million dollars on HVAC, windows, and a roof on old buildings.

 

 

The portion of the Spirit Lake high school that would be replaced was constructed in 1958, the old portion of the elementary school was built in 1982.

Today’s meeting will be held at the board room in the high school.
