Planning a Fall Getaway? How to Prepare Your Pet for Boarding

Fall is a great time to travel. Maybe you’re heading out for a football weekend, visiting family, squeezing in one last getaway before winter or already making plans for the upcoming holidays.

If your dog can’t make the trip, there’s another item that belongs on your travel checklist: Making sure they’re prepared for their stay, too.

A little planning can make boarding easier for your dog, easier for you and easier for the people caring for them.

Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute

One of our biggest pieces of advice is simple: plan ahead.

Busy weekends and holidays can fill quickly. Making your boarding reservation early gives you one less thing to worry about – and gives you time to make sure your pet is ready.

If your dog has never boarded before, planning ahead is especially helpful. You don’t want your first conversation about vaccinations, medications or special needs happening as you’re trying to get on the road.

Make Sure Vaccinations Are Current

Before boarding, confirm that your pet meets the facility’s vaccination requirements.

Heartland Pet Resort requires dogs to be current on rabies, distemper/parvo and Bordetella vaccinations.

Don’t assume everything is current just because your dog had a veterinary appointment recently. Check your records ahead of time so you’re not scrambling immediately before your trip.

Tell Us About Your Dog’s Normal Routine

One of the best things you can do for anyone caring for your dog is provide good information.

How much do they eat? When do they normally eat? Do they take medications? Do they have any allergies or sensitivities?

But go beyond the basics… Tell us about your dog’s personality, too.

Do they get nervous during storms? Are they uncomfortable around certain dogs? Are they an escape artist? Do they guard their food or toys? Are they afraid of certain noises? Do they have trouble settling at night?

These may seem like little details, but they can be extremely helpful to the people responsible for making your dog’s stay safe and comfortable.

Be Honest About Behavior

We love our dogs, quirks and all!

But when your pet is staying somewhere new, honesty about behavior is incredibly important.

If your dog has shown aggression, separation anxiety, resource guarding, fearfulness or another behavior that could affect their stay, let the boarding staff know.

Sharing that information isn’t something to be embarrassed about. It helps us provide better care for your dog.

Should I Bring Things From Home?

A familiar item can sometimes help a pet settle into a new environment, but ask your boarding facility what they recommend and allow.

Also consider your dog’s habits. If your dog destroys bedding or toys when anxious, their favorite expensive bed might not be the best item to pack!

Most importantly, make sure any food, medications or approved personal items are clearly labeled and accompanied by instructions.

Choose the Experience That’s Right for Your Dog

Not every dog has the same needs while boarding.

Some dogs are perfectly happy with a comfortable place to stay, regular activity and attention. Others benefit from additional one-on-one interaction, outdoor time or enrichment.

At Heartland Pet Resort, we offer different boarding options so owners can choose the experience that best fits their pet. Depending on the option selected, dogs can receive play and walks, outdoor-run accommodations, personalized play, enrichment and updates for their owners.

Our goal is to make your pet’s stay as safe, comfortable and positive as possible.

And Remember: Your Dog Can Read You!

Drop-off day can be emotional – especially the first time.

But an extremely long, anxious goodbye can sometimes make the transition harder. Give your dog some love, keep your departure positive and trust the professionals you’ve chosen to care for them.

Preparing ahead of time can make a big difference for everyone.

So as you make your fall travel plans, and especially as you start looking ahead toward Thanksgiving and Christmas, remember to make your pet’s plans, too.

If you have questions about boarding, what your dog will need or which boarding option may be best for them, contact Heartland Pet Resort. We’re happy to help you prepare so you can enjoy your trip knowing your four-legged family member is being cared for back home.
