Pocahontas, Ia (Northwest Iowa Now) – Pocahontas Area hosted Emmetsburg for the Class 1A District 2 Opener on Thursday night after the game had been moved up from Friday due to potential weather.

Emmetsburg scored on their first drive of the game when Beckham Shirk ran it in from 29 yards out.

It was a low possession grind throughout.  Pocahontas Area would break into the endzone in the 2nd quarter when Coen Hammen connected with Gabe Halligan on a 21-Yard Touchdown Pass.  An unsuccessful PAT left the lead with Emmetsburg at 7-6.  That score would hold going into the half.

Emmetsburg came out of the locker room strong with a 5 play 47-yard drive capped off by a 1-yard Touchdown run by Joe Fischer to extend the E-Hawk lead to 8.

Defenses stood tall in the redzone through the remainder of the 3rd and much of the 4th quarters.  Pocahontas Area got the ball back with short time in the game, down by 8.  PAC ripped down the field and scored on a Coen Hammen to Xander Small Touchdown Pass to bring Pocahontas Area within 2.  They would punch in the conversion on a trick play to Karson Welander to send the game to overtime.

Brennan Hasbrouck picked up a 10-yard Touchdown Run in overtime to give Emmetsburg the lead first at 22-14 after the successful 2-point conversion.

Isaiah Helle picked off Pocahontas Area’s pass on their overtime try, sealing the game for Emmetsburg at 22-14.

The E-Hawks ran for 279 yards on 52 carries as a team, led by Joe Fischers 138 yards and 1 Touchdown.  Emmetsburg is now 2-2 on the year and prepares for a home matchup against South Central Calhoun.

Pocahontas Area drops to 2-2 with the loss despite outgaining Emmetsburg 333-294.  PAC will be back in action next week against Manson-Northwest Webster on the road.
