Spencer, Ia (Northwest Iowa Now) – It was a big day at teh Northwest Iowa Soccer Field as both the Iowa Lakes Men’s and Women’s teams hosted ICCAC foe Northeast.

The Northeast Women came in at 7-5-4 and ranked #12 in the latest NJCAA Division II poll. The Laker Women controlled possesion through most of the match, but neither team was able to score, and it ended in a scoreless draw. Captain and keeper Holly Poole was happy with how Iowa Lakes performed, but says the Lakers need to finish.

A big reason for Iowa Lakes’ ability to control possesion is their formations according to Freshman Louise Argou.

Iowa Lakes is now 1-5-4 on the season after the draw and 1-1-2 in the ICCAC, putting them 5th on the League’s Division II Table.

The Men’s match featured the #1 ranked team in NJCAA Division I Iowa Lakes, and the #2 ranked Northeast. The two sides have each claimed National Championships in the last 5 seasons, and the rivalry has become feirce.

There was a flury of goals in the first half. Iowa Lakes struck first, followed by a quick response by the Hawks. The Lakers re-took the lead only moments later, and held it going in to the half uup 2-1.

Early in the 2nd half, Northeast was able to tie the match at 2. Ewan Harrington wasn’t dissapointed with Iowa Lakes’ defensive effort, but is looking for improvement.

When the final horn sounded, the match remained tied at 2. Noah Mortensen is dissapointed the Lakers weren’t able to come out on top, but liked the effort put forth.

Iowa Lakes is now 7-0-4 on the year while Northeast goes to 10-0-3. Both teams are 3-0-1 in the league, which places them in a three way tie at the top of the ICCAC Division II Table along with Iowa Central.

Both Laker Soccer teams will be back in action on Saturday, traveling to Burlington where they will take on Southeastern.
