Terril, IA (Northwest Iowa Now) — The city of Terril issued a release Saturday morning notifying residents to not drink the water.
According to a release sent to Northwest Iowa Now – the city of Terril has high levels of Manganese. The water is experiencing an issue of sodium permanganate, causing a light pink color to the water. This level is above the Environmental Protection Agency’s short-term health advisory of 1 mg/L.
Residents in Terril should not drink the tap water. Do not give tap water to infants or their formula. Do not give tap water to children or adults. Do not boil the water. Boiling, freezing or letting water stand does not reduce the manganese.
Adults and children of all ages can continue to bathe and shower, brush their teeth, and wash clothes, food, and dishes in tap water. If you have specific concerns, you may wish to consult your doctor.
The city of Terril will be flushing hydrants and testing the manganese levels. Once the levels are back to normal, you will be notified that the levels are below the health advisory level.
