Spencer, IA (northwestiowanow) — Spencer officials are weighing whether to purchase flood insurance for several city buildings or self-insure the facilities instead.
The discussion comes after the city received quotes totaling about $130,000 annually for coverage on City Hall, the Police Station, Communications Center and Fire Station.
City Manager Kevin Robinson says staff believes self-insuring those properties would be the more cost-effective option.
The building viewed as the greatest concern is the Fire Station, where critical mechanical equipment remains in the basement.
He says staff also continue to closely monitor weather and river conditions as part of their flood preparedness efforts.
Officials recently monitored a flood watch affecting the area but determined public warnings were unnecessary after the heaviest rainfall shifted south of Spencer.
