Sac City, IA (KICD) — The County Attorney from Sac County says it appears the missing trucker whose body was found in a cornfield this spring died of hypothermia, and he likely wound up in that location because of methamphetamines and sleep deprivation.
Ben Smith also says that from the state of decomposition the state medical examiner has determined that David Schultz’s body had been in that location for several months.
The abandoned truck was found on highway 20 on November 21st, and the body was found by a farmhand preparing the field for tiling on April 24th. The field was full of cornstalks approximately shin high impeding the visual possibility of discovery.
The Attorney says months of exhaustive investigation yield no signs of foul play but uncovered that Schultz had been trucking for nearly 30 consecutive hours with little or no rest motivated to support his business and young family. The conclusion is that no sleep and stimulants brought on a medical emergency and Schultz wandered into the field where he collapsed.
