Sidney, IA (KICD)– A Spirit Lake man is facing felony charges in two counties following a series of incidents last week.

20-year-old Kendel Schmidt was taken into custody last Monday in Fremont County for first degree theft when deputies located a vehicle reportedly stolen in Dickinson County.

Police say Schmidt later assaulted a Correctional Officer causing minor injuries in an attempt to escape custody which led to additional charges for attempted escape, assault on a person in a certain occupation, second degree robbery and fifth degree criminal mischief.

Online court records show Schmidt is scheduled to appear in court as early as later this week if he remains in custody. If released on bond, a court date is scheduled for mid-April.
