Spencer, IA (Northwestiowanow.com) — Several key positions in local government could be decided this week in the broadcast area.
Tomorrow is election day; The Sheldon City Council will vote on Mayor Greg Geels appointment of Interim Police Chief Eric Meinecke to be chief Wednesday night; and the Spencer City Council could appoint a new City Manager tonight.
When former Manager Dan Gifford announced his retirement date the city engaged consultant Brent Hinson to recruit a replacement. Then the flood hit. Within days two-term mayor Kevin Robinson – who was serving as cemetery director – was appointed as acting Deputy City Manager. After Gifford left September 30th, he was made acting City Manager.
The city also needs a Finance Director, and Robinson expressed his opinion on how to move forward several months ago.

Spencer’s city officials have publicly expressed admiration for the way Robinson has handled both appointive positions. They will discuss a job description and salary at a committee meeting at 5:30 tonight and have a closed session to discuss the job followed by possible hiring of a new City Manager in open session on the agenda at the 6:30 city council meeting.
