MILFORD, IA (Northwestiowanow) – As thousands of cyclists prepare to roll into Milford this Sunday for RAGBRAI, local organizers are planning a tribute to veterans, ahead of a historic moment in the ride’s 52-year history.
On Sunday, July 20, veterans who have participated in an Honor Flight are invited to gather to form a welcome line at 2:00 PM at the intersection of M Avenue and 15th Street, near the Catholic Church baseball diamond.
Milford Mayor Steve Anderson said the tribute is especially meaningful this year, as RAGBRAI has chosen the Honor Flight Network as its charitable partner.
The idea came together in partnership with the Milford American Legion, and no registration is required. Any Honor Flight veteran is welcome to participate.
The Honor Flight Network is a nonprofit that flies veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit memorials dedicated to their service. RAGBRAI’s donation will help fund future flights for Iowa veterans.
The tribute sets the stage for a landmark moment in RAGBRAI history. On Monday, riders will depart Milford and, for the first time ever, cross into Minnesota as part of the route to Estherville.
Jackson County, Minnesota will host a 15-mile stretch of the ride, with more than 20 food and beverage vendors set up at Brown Park South, nestled between Pearl Lake and Loon Lake. Riders will be invited to dip their tires in Pearl Lake, a RAGBRAI tradition symbolizing the start or end of their journey.
Iowa State Patrol Trooper Kevin Krull said coordination with Minnesota law enforcement has been smooth, and troopers will be on hand to help direct traffic and keep riders safe.
