The two incumbents on the Clay County board of supervisors won their primary last night. Art Hamrick was the big vote-getter of the night with 691. Randy Swanson got 568. Challenger Sharon Johannsen racked up 475 primary votes.

In Dickinson County, challenger Steve Dullard defeated incumbent Jeff Thee in district 3, 167 to 94.

In Emmet County Justin Schultes has won his primary, making him the likely new Sheriff. The incumbent is retiring. Schultes received 438 votes to Jeffrey Merrill’s 314. In the Republican primary for county supervisor, there were 4 candidates and 3 spots. Lisa Hansen garnered the most support with 525 votes, incumbent Tim Schumacher was next with 436, and former Estherville city council member Brandon Carlin who recently moved outside of city limits was right behind with 434. Mike Pytelski got 327 votes in that contest. In the Democrat primary for those 3 supervisor seats only incumbent Todd Glasnapp was on the ballot.

In Cherokee County, Sheriff Derek Scott cruised to an easy victory with 1,457 votes to Cherokee Police officer Zachary Smith’s 316. It appears the incumbent supervisor in district number 1, Rick Mongan survived a crowded race. He received 456 votes, just six more than Ray E. Mullins the 2nd. Chad Brown got 421 and Phil Stowater got 381. In district 5 where the incumbent did not seek re-election, Shane Bellefy got a commanding 782 votes. Craig Schmidt received 551, Timothy R. Wych 236, and Matthew Aguirre Jr. 117.

In O’Brien County, retiring Auditor Barb Rohwer proved her continuing popularity by getting more than three times the votes as incumbent John Steensma in Supervisor District 2, 1,143 to 373. In district 1 Jim Thomas defeated incumbent Timothy Overmire 859 to 592. In District 3 incumbent Nancy McDowell fended off a challenge from Shanelle Matus 996 to 501 votes.

In Osceola County Jeff Loring won the open district 5 seat with 106 votes to Ed Jones’ 63.

In Pocahontas County Peter Seehusen is the winner for county board of supervisor in District 1.
