Spencer, IA (KICD)– Area Education Agencies have been getting a lot of attention from Iowa lawmakers in the last few weeks after an announcement was made that there would be some research done to update the current policies.
The discussion on this matter used a large amount of the time at Saturday’s first Eggs and Issues Legislative Forum hosted by the Spencer Chamber of Commerce.
During the session, state officials were asked how to slow down what appeared to some to be a fast-track style movement of the bill with Senator Lynn Evans noting it may not be moving as fast as it seems.
Senator Evans, who is a former school administrator, added it may be time to revamp the current 50-year-old policies, but it is important to have local school districts involved and not so much at what the federal government thinks should be done.
An amendment to the original bill was received by lawmakers Saturday morning and while she had not had a chance to read through the entire thing, Representative Megan Jones says it is her opinion that there is at least some general agreement that some change needs to be made.
