Orleans, IA (KICD) — An area law enforcement officer was charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle under the Influence over the weekend.

An Iowa DNR officer says he observed a Honda Side by Side enter the Marble Beach Recreation area on the West side of Big Spirit Lake about 9 o’clock Saturday morning, and drove by two posted signs prohibiting golf cars and side by sides.

Enforcement officer Chase Gehrke says the operator was 61-year-old Mike Martens – the elected Sheriff from Emmet County.

Gehrke says he administered field sobriety tests on the scene and filed 1st offense OWI charges. Martens was booked into the Dickinson County jail and appeared before a magistrate Sunday morning.
