Cherokee, IA (KICD)– Astronomy buffs will want to turn an eye to the sky throughout this week as we near the annual peak of the Perseid Meteor Shower.
Linda Burkhart from the Sanford Museum and Planetarium in Cherokee tells KICD News this particular meteor shower is special because of the frequency “shooting stars” can be seen.
Burkhart says the Perseid Meteor Shower gets it name from what is believed to be the origin of the rocks we say entering the Earth’s atmosphere.
Those wanting to really take in the meteors and have some additional fun as well are invited to join Sanford Museum and Planetarium for a special event Saturday evening at 9:30 at Cherokee County Fairgrounds.
The Perseid Meteor Shower peaks Friday into Saturday, but the shower itself can be seen through August 22nd.
